Following graduation with a B.A. degree from Drake University, Dr. Johnson received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 1975.  Following graduation he served in the United States Army as a General Dental Officer in Reynolds Army Hospital at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.  Dr. Johnson received his Certificate of Specialization in Endodontics and Master of Science Degree from the University of Iowa in 1981.   He has made a career of teaching and research in dental education.  He has served as Department Chair at two research intense universities (Nebreaska and Iowa) and has been President of both the American Association of Endodontists (2012 and the American Board of Endodontics (1999 and 2000).  In 2006 Dr. Johnson was awarded the Richard E. Walton Endodontic Professorship by the University of Iowa Provost. 

After serving as a Dental Officer in the United States Army at Fort Sill from 1975 to 1977, Dr. Johnson was an active member of the 294th Medical Detachment of the Iowa Army National Guard from 1977 to 1995.   In 1993 Dr. Johnson was awarded the "A" Proficiency Designator, the highest award for professional achievement given by the Office of the Surgeon General, United States Army.  He has received the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf cluster, the Army Achievement Medal, an Overseas Service Medal, a National Defense Medal, an Army Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, a State Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters.   In 1995 Dr. Johnson retired from the Iowa Army National Guard with the rank of Brigadier General. 
 
Dr. Johnson has published over 40 manuscripts in referred journals and numerous book chapters.  In 2002 Dr. Johnson’s textbook, Color Atlas of Endodontics was published by W.B. Saunders Company and has been translated into Italian (Verduci Editore, Rome, Italy) and Korean (Daehan Publishing, Seoul, Korea). 
He was the senior author for the Obturation Chapter for the 9th, 10th, and 11th  Edition of Pathways of the Pulp and is the senior author for the Access Chapter (4th and 5th Editions) and the Instrumentation Chapters for Principles and Practice of Endodontics  4th Edition.
